Panos Institute Caribbean resumes feature article
distribution
Kingston, 14 August 2005 -
The Panos Institute Caribbean is a 19 year-old regional development
NGO that works closely with journalists and the media to increase
coverage of development issues that are often overlooked or
misunderstood, in particular those whose impact transcends national
boundaries.
In April 2005, the Panos Institute mission was given a boost with
the decision to deepen the organisation's coverage of issues relevant
to the Wider Caribbean region and the Diaspora. The name was adapted
slightly, to Panos Institute Caribbean. Presently, the organisation
has offices in Port-au-Prince (Haiti), Kingston (Jamaica) and Washington,
DC. Panos Haiti is the main office of Panos Institute Caribbean
and coordinates: (i) Caribbean and Central America programme, (ii)
Child Rights, (iii) Haiti
programme.
Panos Jamaica, established in 2004, coordinates: (i) Regional Information
Production, (ii) HIV/AIDS, (iii) Jamaica programme. The organisation's
production capacity was boosted in July when journalists, Indi Mclymont
and Patricia Watson, joined the staff. Ms. Mclymont will function
as Journalist/Programme officer and will be responsible for the
production of radio and print articles which will be distributed
in four languages (English, Spanish, French and Kreyol) to both
the local and regional media. She will also cover issues in environment,
gender and health.
Ms. Watson is the Caribbean Director for HIV/AIDS and will be responsible
for coverage of HIV/AIDS issues, the training of journalists on
HIV/AIDS coverage and a range of other programmes.
As a result, Panos Institute Caribbean will now resume its regular
distribution of print articles and radio features to the media in
Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. Media houses are welcome to use
the articles free of cost once credits are given. Panos would also
appreciate feedback on the pieces as well
as references to other persons who would benefit from the information
being circulated.
The global network of Panos Institutes also includes: Panos Canada
(Vancouver, Canada), Panos Eastern Africa (Kampala, Uganda and Addis
Abeba, Ethiopia), Panos London, Panos Paris, Panos South Asia (Kathmandu,
Nepal; New Delhi, India, Colombo, Sri Lanka and Karachi, Pakistan),
Panos Southern Africa (Lusaka, Zambia) and Panos West Africa (Dakar,
Senegal and Bamako, Mali).
